The Hollywood High School is losing their beloved Guidance Counselor Emma Pillsbury, portrayed by actress Jayma Mays. She left her position to film a supporting role in the horror short “Terror on the Turnpike” for Horror Weeks (now in theaters).
“Turnpike” is one of two stories in the horror anthology. Director Joss Whedon spoke to us about Mays casting. “The role is small but crucial,” he began, “We needed someone to be instantly likable and relatable.” Jayma Mays certainly fits the bill, having reprised her Glee role of Emma Pillsbury for the 2012 movie Glee: Expedition To Fame. and keeping up the character in the Hollywood High School for the past few years.
In her short, with is a spinoff/adaptation of Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, she joins Adam Baldwin, who portrays her husband, Elle Fanning as her daughter Zooey, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as the big bad, and Timothy Olyphant who takes over the role of Pike, a character from the Buffy movie that inspired the TV series. Pike never made it into the TV series, but has been established in the comics that spun off from the show.
The short was written by Flip Brothers Studio head RS, a long time fan of the Whedon classic. The short horror adaptation joins the short “Morlocks” by Lucian. We’ll have more on that short with an upcoming article. You can catch the movie in theaters worldwide now.
